When Italian explorer Marco Polo traveled through Asia and saw what he thought to be a unicorn for the first time in the 13th century, he found that unicorn stories didn't quite match reality (a detailed account from the "Travels of Marco Polo" section. Penguin Classics, 1958). Marco Polo wrote: “They enjoy living in marsh and mud. It is a monstrous beast in appearance and in no way what we think and say in our countries.” Polo described the creature in question as a creature with a large black horn, feathers like a buffalo, and feet like an elephant. According to the Brown University Library, it's widely accepted today that the creature that Polo describes as a "unicorn" is a rhinoceros. In the Middle Ages, sailors and traders introduced narwhal (Monodon monoceros) tusks to European markets and sold them as "unicorn" horns, according to the American Museum of Natural History. Narwhals were toothed whales in the Arctic. Male narwhals had a 2 to 3 meter long protruding tooth resembling a horn.
